About Repair PDF
Repair PDF tries to fix PDFs that will not open or show errors — files damaged by an interrupted download, a broken email attachment or faulty software. It rebuilds the PDF's internal structure (its cross-reference table and object list) with qpdf, which can often recover a readable document.
Repair works best when the file is a real PDF with structural damage. It cannot recover content that is completely missing — for example a download that stopped halfway — or files that are not PDFs at all.
How to use Repair PDF
- Upload the damaged PDF.
- Press Repair.
- Download the rebuilt PDF and open it. If the tool says the file is too damaged, try to get a fresh copy from the source.
Key features
- Rebuilds broken cross-reference tables and object structure
- Uses qpdf's proven recovery logic
- Clear message when a file cannot be recovered
- Your original file is never modified
When to use Repair PDF
- Opening a PDF that shows "file is damaged" after an interrupted download.
- Fixing an email attachment that a PDF reader refuses to open.
- Recovering a document saved by a program that crashed halfway.
Tips and common problems
- First try downloading the file again — many "damaged" PDFs are simply incomplete downloads.
- Open the file in a different reader (a browser often works); some readers are stricter than others.
- If the file size is just a few kilobytes, it is probably an error page, not a PDF — repair cannot help.
Frequently asked questions
If large parts of the file are missing or it is not a PDF at all (for example an HTML error page saved with a .pdf name), there is nothing left to rebuild.
Only the internal structure is rebuilt. Pages that were readable remain the same.
No, it is protected. Use Unlock PDF with the password instead.
