About PDF Page Numbers

Add Page Numbers puts a page number at the bottom centre of every page in the format "1 / 12", so readers always know where they are and how long the document is. It is ideal for reports, theses, contracts and printed handouts.

The numbers are small and grey, placed 18 points above the bottom edge so they sit in the page margin of normal documents. Files are sent over HTTPS, processed on our server and deleted automatically after you download the result.

How to use PDF Page Numbers

  1. Upload the PDF.
  2. Press Add Page Numbers.
  3. Download the numbered PDF.

Key features

  • "page / total" numbering on every page
  • Centred at the bottom of the page
  • Small grey text that doesn't distract
  • Works on PDFs of any length

When to use PDF Page Numbers

  • Numbering pages of a project report, thesis or assignment before submission.
  • Adding page numbers to a merged PDF so pages can be referred to in a meeting.
  • Numbering printed handouts or manuals.

Tips and common problems

  • Merge all parts first, then add numbers once, so numbering is continuous.
  • Numbers are placed at the bottom centre; check pages that already have a footer in that spot.
  • For legal-style unique identifiers, use Bates Numbering instead.

Frequently asked questions
