About Flatten PDF

Flatten PDF merges form fields, comments and other annotations into the page content, so the PDF looks the same in every viewer and can no longer be edited field by field. It is the usual last step after filling in a PDF form, before you send or archive it.

Flattening stops filled-in answers from disappearing or being changed in viewers that handle forms differently, and makes sure highlights, stamps and comments print exactly as you see them.

How to use Flatten PDF

  1. Upload the filled-in or annotated PDF.
  2. Press Flatten.
  3. Download the flattened PDF — the values and annotations are now part of the page.

Key features

  • Flattens form fields, comments, stamps and highlights
  • Same appearance in every PDF reader and when printed
  • Prevents casual editing of filled-in values
  • Uses qpdf, an established open-source PDF engine

When to use Flatten PDF

  • Finalising a filled-in application or tax form before submitting it.
  • Making sure comments, highlights and stamps print exactly as they look on screen.
  • Sharing a filled form so the recipient cannot accidentally change the answers.

Tips and common problems

  • Flatten only a copy — keep the original if you may need to edit the answers later.
  • Open the result and check every field; values without a visible appearance can come out blank.
  • Flattening is not security. To control who can open the file, protect it with a password as well.

Frequently asked questions

No. The fields become ordinary page content. Keep a copy of the original if you may need to change the answers later.
