About Text Compare
Text Compare is a free diff checker that shows exactly what changed between two versions of a text — a contract clause, an essay draft, a config file, code, or a list. Removed text is highlighted in red and added text in green, side by side (Split) or in one column (Unified), with changes marked word by word or character by character.
You can ignore differences in letter case or whitespace, transform both texts at once (sort lines, trim spaces, remove blank lines, lowercase), jump from change to change, hide unchanged lines, open or drag in files, and export the result as a .diff file. It runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you paste is uploaded.
How to use Text Compare
- Paste or drop the original text on the left and the changed text on the right.
- Press Find difference.
- Switch between Split and Unified, word and character highlighting, and step through the changes.

Frequently asked questions
It uses a proven diff algorithm (the same approach as Google's diff-match-patch) to find the smallest set of insertions and deletions that turns one text into the other, then highlights the changed words or characters inside each line.
Turn on "ignore whitespace" so differences in spaces, tabs and line endings are not counted as changes.
Text Compare works with text. For PDFs, use Compare PDF, which extracts the text first. For Word files, copy the text from each document into the two boxes.
