How to Remove Duplicate Lines

4 min read · Updated 2026-09-23

Duplicate entries creep into every kind of list: mailing lists, keyword research, log files, product SKUs and exported data. Removing them by hand is slow and error-prone, especially when the list is long.

This guide covers how to dedupe a list quickly and the options that make the difference between a clean result and a messy one.

The options that matter

Case sensitivity: should "Apple" and "apple" count as the same line? For emails and keywords they usually should, so an "ignore case" option is important.

Trimming whitespace: stray spaces at the start or end of a line make two otherwise-identical entries look different. Trimming each line before comparing avoids false uniques.

Blank lines: most of the time you want empty rows removed entirely rather than kept as a single blank entry.

Beyond simple dedupe

Sometimes you want more than just the unique list. Showing only the duplicates helps you audit where repetition came from. Showing only lines that appear exactly once is useful for finding one-off entries. And sorting the result alphabetically makes a long list easier to scan.

Choosing whether to keep the first or last occurrence matters when the surrounding order carries meaning.

Remove duplicates in three steps

With the FilesSwift Remove Duplicate Lines tool:

  1. Paste your list, one item per line.
  2. Choose options: ignore case, trim spaces, remove blanks, sort.
  3. Copy or download the cleaned, de-duplicated list.

Frequently asked questions

Can I ignore capitalisation when removing duplicates?

Yes. Turn on "ignore case" so "Apple" and "apple" are treated as the same line.

Can I see only the duplicated lines?

Yes. The tool can list only the lines that were duplicated, or only the lines that appear once.

Is my list uploaded anywhere?

No. Deduplication runs entirely in your browser, so your data never leaves your device.

Can I sort the result?

Yes, alphabetically A→Z or Z→A, in addition to removing duplicates.
