About Hash Generator

Hash Generator computes MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 hashes of text or of a file. Use it to verify that a download matches its published checksum, to compare files, or to create fingerprints for caching and deduplication.

Text is hashed as UTF-8. Files are read and hashed on your device, so even large or private files are never uploaded. SHA hashes use your browser's built-in Web Crypto API.

How to use Hash Generator

  1. Type or paste text — or choose "Hash a file".
  2. All five hashes are shown at once.
  3. Copy the hash you need, or compare it with the published checksum.

Key features

  • MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512
  • Hash text or files
  • Files never leave your device
  • Browser-native Web Crypto for SHA

Example

Hashes of the five-letter word "hello" (no trailing newline).

Input
hello
Output
MD5: 5d41402abc4b2a76b9719d911017c592
SHA-1: aaf4c61ddcc5e8a2dabede0f3b482cd9aea9434d
SHA-256: 2cf24dba5fb0a30e26e83b2ac5b9e29e1b161e5c1fa7425e73043362938b9824

When to use Hash Generator

  • Verifying a downloaded installer against the SHA-256 checksum on the publisher's site.
  • Checking whether two files are identical without comparing them byte by byte.
  • Generating fingerprints for caching or deduplication.

Tips and common problems

  • Compare the whole hash, not just the first few characters.
  • One extra space or new line changes the hash completely.
  • Use SHA-256 for anything security-related; MD5 and SHA-1 are only for change detection.

Frequently asked questions

SHA-256 for anything security-related. MD5 and SHA-1 are broken for security but still fine for spotting accidental changes.
