Why iPhone Photos Won't Upload — and How to Convert HEIC to JPG

5 min read · Updated 2026-10-05

You take a photo on an iPhone, send it to your computer and try to upload it to a form — and the site says "file type not supported", or Windows shows a file you cannot open. The reason is almost always the HEIC format.

This guide explains what HEIC is, why it causes trouble, and three simple ways to get a normal JPG.

What is HEIC?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container, part of the HEIF standard) is the format iPhones and iPads use by default since iOS 11. It stores photos at roughly half the size of a JPG with similar quality, which saves a lot of space on your phone.

The problem is support. Many websites, government portals, older Windows PCs and editing programs only accept JPG or PNG. Windows can open HEIC only after installing the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store, and many upload forms check the file type and reject HEIC outright.

Option 1: convert HEIC to JPG online

If you already have HEIC files, convert them with Image Converter:

  1. Upload the .heic or .heif photo.
  2. Choose JPG as the output format (or PNG if you need lossless quality).
  3. Download the JPG and upload it wherever you need it.

Option 2: let the iPhone convert automatically when sharing

On the iPhone, go to Settings → Photos and, under "Transfer to Mac or PC", choose Automatic. Photos copied to a computer over a cable are then converted to JPG automatically.

Sharing a photo through many apps also converts it to JPG on the way, but this depends on the app, so do not rely on it for important uploads.

Option 3: make the iPhone take JPG photos

If you regularly need JPGs, go to Settings → Camera → Formats and choose "Most Compatible". New photos will be saved as JPG. Your existing photos stay HEIC, and JPG photos take more space on the phone.

After converting: check size and dimensions

iPhone photos are large — often 4032 × 3024 pixels. If the form also has a size limit, resize the JPG with Image Resizer and, if needed, reduce the file size with Image Compressor.

HEIC photos can contain location data. If you are posting a photo publicly, consider removing metadata when compressing it.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?

JPG uses lossy compression, so the file is not bit-for-bit identical, but at normal quality settings the difference is not visible. Choose PNG if you need lossless output.

Why is the JPG bigger than the HEIC?

HEIC compresses more efficiently, so the same photo takes more space as JPG. That is normal.

What is the difference between HEIC and HEIF?

HEIF is the image standard; HEIC is the file type Apple uses for HEIF images encoded with HEVC. For conversion purposes they are the same thing.

Can I convert Live Photos?

The still image of a Live Photo is a HEIC file and converts normally; the short video part is a separate file.
