About Excel Password Protector
Excel Password Protect encrypts an Excel workbook (.xlsx) so that it cannot be opened without the password you set. Use it before emailing salary sheets, client data or financial models.
This is real file encryption, the same kind Excel uses for "Encrypt with Password", not just sheet protection. Excel, LibreOffice and other modern spreadsheet apps will ask for the password when the file is opened.
How to use Excel Password Protector
- Upload your .xlsx workbook.
- Type a strong password and keep a copy of it somewhere safe.
- Press Protect and download the encrypted workbook.
Key features
- Encrypts the whole workbook with a password
- Opens in Excel and other modern spreadsheet apps
- Uses Office's standard file encryption
- Your file and password are not stored
When to use Excel Password Protector
- Emailing salary sheets, payroll or employee data to HR or an accountant.
- Sharing a client list or price workbook with a partner securely.
- Storing financial models or budgets on a shared drive.
Tips and common problems
- Use a long password (12+ characters) — short passwords on Excel files can be guessed by cracking tools.
- Send the password separately from the file, for example by phone or SMS.
- Keep an unprotected copy in a safe place in case the password is lost.
Frequently asked questions
There is no way to recover it — not even for us. Store the password in a password manager before you share the file.
No. Protect Sheet only stops editing and is easy to bypass. This encrypts the entire file, so it cannot be opened at all without the password.
It works with .xlsx workbooks. Save older .xls files as .xlsx first; CSV files cannot hold encryption.
